More and more people are likely going abroad for working, studying or travelling purposes. But most of them will have culture shock when they first arrive in a new country because the culture varies in different countries. People may have problems with many new things, such as languages, academic studies, jobs, food and so on. This essay will introduce to you the 5 stages of culture shock - honeymoon, negotiation, adjustment, isolation and integration.

During the first few weeks in a new enviroment, which is known as honeymoon period, people feel excited, stimulated and curious at new culture, At this stage, people are fascinated by many new things. For example, foreigners first come to China may be surprised at the various Chinese dialects, such as Cantonese.

The nest stage is called Negotiation. After some time, foreigners become rejected to differences they encounter. They might feel unhappy, angry or hostile to this culture. For example, lots of people smoke and chat loudly in public place in China, but the foreigners can’t stand it as these do no usually happen in their own countries. There are also many different rules they dislike. However, they have to adjust themselves in this culture.

However, to most foreigners, they will enter into the next stage, isolation.The difference makes them lonely, confused and stressful as no friends and familiar people are around to support them mentally and physically. After all these, they might become more relaxed and start to make new friends. They are able to handle new situations with their growing experience.This stage is integration.

After people pass through all these five stages, they will feel like staying at motherland while abroad. With extraordinary experience, I believe that it is enjoyable to live in a new country,
