This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Quang in Vietnam, who says: It would be a big help if you could teach me the difference between &34;fix&34; and &34;repair&34;.

My cell phone was not working yesterday. I tried to fix it but I was unable to.

我的手機昨天壞了。我想把它修好，但我不會修。

So, I took it to a shop to have it repaired. The words &34;fix&34; and &34;repair&34; can be verbs or nouns.

所以，我把它拿去商店修理。fix和repair可以是動詞也可以是名詞。

Today, I will focus mainly on the verbs. Both verbs mean to put something that is broken or damaged back into good condition.

今天，我主要講動詞。這兩個動詞都表示將損壞的東西修好。

Often, we use &34;fix&34; and &34;repair&34; interchangeably, which means either word can be used. But the verb &34;fix&34; is much more common in everyday speech.

通常，&34;fix&34;和&34;repair&34;可以互換使用，這意味著這兩個詞都可以使用。但是fix這個動詞在日常用語中更常見。

Generally, we use &34;repair&34; when we want to sound more formal. We can also use &34;repair&34; when someone with expertise is doing the work.

一般來說，當我們想要聽起來更正式時，我們會使用&34;repair&34;。當有專業知識的人在做某項工作時，我們也可以用repair。

For example, you can take your clothing, phone, computer, car or musical instrument to a shop to have it repaired. Or a person might come to your home to repair your air conditioner, refrigerator or something else.

例如，你可以把你的衣服、電話、電腦、汽車或樂器帶到商店去修理。或者有人可能來你家修理你的空調、冰箱或其他東西。

In each of these cases, the person doing the work is an expert at it. However, even when we are talking about such repairs, we may still use the word &34;fix&34;.

在這種情況下，從事這項工作的人都是這方面的專家。然而，即使我們在談論這種修理時，我們仍然可以使用&34;fix&34;這個詞。

For example, you can say, &34;The tailor fixed the zipper on my jeans&34; or &34;The repairman is fixing the refrigerator&34;. In other words, you can almost always use &34;fix,&34; except in some cases.

例如，你可以說：&34;The tailor fixed the zipper on my jeans&34;（裁縫修好了我牛仔褲上的拉鏈）或者&34;The repairman is fixing the refrigerator&34;（ 修理工正在修電冰箱）。換句話說，除了某些情況外，幾乎總是可以使用&34;fix&34;。

Notice that I used the word &34;repairman&34;. The word &34;repair&34; appears in some job titles, such as repairman, repairwoman, repairperson and repair technician.

注意，我用了&34;repairman&34;（修理工）這個詞。&34;repair&34;一詞出現在一些職業頭銜中，如repairman（修理工）、repairwoman（女修理工）、repairperson（修理工）和repair technician（修理技術員）。

We would not say &34;fixperson,&34; for example. In addition, the word &34;repair&34; appears in the names of many shops that do such work.

One last thing to know: The verbs &34;fix&34; and &34;repair&34; can have other meanings.
