時間雖是不可再生資源，但是卻與我們形影不離，這就造就了 before 很高的出鏡率，因為無論是體現更早的時間還是前面的時間，before 都跟時間有密切的聯系，而且 before 的多詞性使它的用法豐富多彩。

一、before 作介詞

1. 指定時序事件，相當于 earlier than sb /sth，意為”在…以前“，例如：

I must get home before nine o’clock.

我必須在九點以前到家。

Leave your keys at reception before departure.

離開前請把鑰匙留在服務臺。

I like to go for a run before breakfast.

我喜歡早飯前去跑步。

He arrived before me.

他比我先到。

2. 在某些情況下，before 也可以用來指定先后位置，相當于 in front of sb/sth，意為”在…面前（前面）“，對應的是介詞 behind，例如：

They knelt before the throne.

他們跪在御座前。

Before you is a list of the points we have to discuss.

放在你面前的是一份我們要討論的要點清單。

3. 表示在順序或安排上某人或某物先于某人或某物，相當于 ahead of sb/sth，例如：

Your name comes before mine on the list.

名單上你的名字排在我的前面。

He puts his work before everything.

他一切以工作為重。

4. 表示”當面“，相當于 in the presence of sb，通常 sb 是正在聽或等待等的人，例如：

He was brought before the judge.

他被帶到裁判面前。

She said it before witnesses.

她當著證人的面講出這事。

注意：在英文寫作中，當提到已經寫過的東西時，用 above 而不用 before，例如：

As the graph above shows, the rate of inflation has risen by 15%.

如上圖所示，通貨膨脹率上升了15%。

二、before 作副詞

作副詞時，before 相當于 at an earlier time，in the past 或 already，意為”以前；過去；已經“。

1. 表示現在或說話時間之前的任何時候，此時的用法跟 already 類似，在英式英語中，它們常跟現在完成時連用，例如：

I have seen him before.

我以前見過他。

Have you been here before?

你以前來過這里嗎？

I’m so looking forward to the trip. I haven’t been to Latin America before.

我非常期待這次旅行。我以前沒去過拉丁美洲。

2. 表示在說話的某個過去時間之前的任何時候，即表示過去的過去，常跟過去完成時連用，例如：

Suddenly I realized that I had seen him before.

突然我意識到我以前見過他。

解析：說話的時間是過去（realized），那么 before 是在 realized 之前，表達的是過去的過去，因此用過去完成時（had seen）。

I introduced Tom to Olivia last night. They hadn’t met before.

我昨晚把湯姆介紹給奧利維亞。他們以前沒見過面。

解析：說話的時間是過去（introduced），那么 before 是在 introduced 之前，表達的是過去的過去，因此用過去完成時（hadn&39;t met）。

3. 與諸如 day，morning，night，week，month 或 year 等時間名詞一起使用，表示過去的一個 day，morning，night，week，month 或 year 等，例如：

Two people were ill at work yesterday and three people the day before!

昨天有兩個人生病上班，前天有三個人！

A: Did you graduate in 1989?

你1989年大學畢業嗎？

B: No, actually, I finished college the year before.

不是，事實上我是在1988年畢業的。

解析：這里的 the year before 譯成什么年份取決于說話時的年份，不過保守還是譯成”1988 年“比較好，不要譯成”前年“，因為如果譯成”前年“的話，那么表明說話時所在的年份是1990，但是這個無從考證。

注意：當表示從此刻算起若干時間以前，用 ago，而不用 before，例如：

這封信是幾天前寄來的。

?: The letter came a few days ago.

?: The letter came a few days before.

剛才她還在這兒。

?: She was here just a minute ago.

?: She was here just a minute before.

三、before 作連詞

1. 作從屬連詞時，before 引導的從句可以放在句首或句尾，放在句首時，通常用逗號把主從句分開，例如：

我總是在吃飯前喂狗。

I always feed the dogs before I have dinner.

Before I have dinner, I always feed the dogs.

2. before 與一般現在時連用談論將來，例如：

我走之前給你打電話。

?: I will call you before I go.

?: I will call you before I will go.

解析：作為一個規則，時間狀語從句中不能出現將來的時態。

3. before 與完成時或過去時連用，強調 before 從句中的動作沒發生或可能不會發生，例如：

You can’t watch TV before you have finished your homework.

你在做完作業之前不能看電視。

解析：have finished 這個動作還沒發生或可能不會發生。

He lost his temper before I had said a word.

我還沒說一句話，他就發脾氣了。

解析：had said 這個動作還沒發生或可能不會發生。

Before I had a chance to thank him, he’d gone.

我還沒來得及感謝他，他就走了。

解析：had 這個動作還沒發生或可能不會發生。

You’re interrupting her before she has even spoken.

她還沒開口你就打斷她了。

解析：has spoken 這個動作還沒發生或可能不會發生。

在正式的寫作中， before 引導的時間狀語從句通常可以省略句子的部分成分，例如：

你不能在做完工作之前回家。

?: You can&39;t go home before finishing the work.

?: Before finishing the work, you can&39;t go home.

煮牛奶之前，先加雞蛋。

?: Add the egg before bringing the milk to the boil.

?: Before bringing the milk to the boil, add the egg.

四、before 與其他成分

before 常與 just，immediately，shortly 或 long 等副詞以及 days，weeks，months 或 years 等時間名詞連用并置于 before 之前，用來強調短暫的時間，例如：

We left just before the final curtain.

我們剛好在演出結束前離開。

He reached Cambridge shortly before three o&39;clock.

他快到3點的時候抵達了劍橋。

It is significant that he changed his will only days before his death.

他在臨終前幾天修改遺囑，這很能說明問題。

五、beforehand

有的時候 beforehand 可以代替 before，特別是所涉及的時間沒那么具體，常見于非正式的口語中，例如：

Make a list of your questions beforehand.

事先列出你的問題。

I wish we&39;d known about it beforehand.

要是我們預先知道這事就好了。

六、before long

Before long 意為”不久，很快”，相當于 after a short time，特別出現在寫作中，例如：

Before long he took over the editing of the magazine.

他不久就接手負責雜志的編輯工作。

We&39;ll be home before long.

我們很快就要到家了。
